This project workshop demonstrates my hand-appliqué
technique using my simple flower pattern of a Colorado
columbine flower! Choose to make a realistic flower, or
go crazy with fabrics of your choosing. The shape of the
columbine makes it ideal for this. The class will also
cover my "Yin-yang" hand-appliqué technique. Don't care
to hand appliqué? Bring your fusible web! A purchased
pattern is required for all students. The pattern may be
enlarged to any size!
Purchased pattern ($10): paid to David in the
classroom.
Each kit includes a pattern and papers to make a
Colorado columbine block.
Bring to class:
• Fabric scraps (various sizes) in the colors or
patterns of their choosing to complete the flower
• Pencil and eraser
• Paper scissor
• Fabric scissor
• Hand-sewing needle: I use John James Gold'n Glide #10
• Hand-sewing thread: I use Masterpiece by Superior

Heather Thomas
Wild Heather Designs
I’m a mixed media fiber artist who got her start with
traditional quilt making. I designed my first pattern
more than 20 years ago and have published more than 100
designs. After more than 12 years of teaching color &
design I wrote my second book, A Fiber Artists Guide to
Color & Design which came on the hills of my wildly
popular first book, Fabric Embellishing; the basics and
beyond.
In 2011 I was a guest writer for Quilting Arts magazine
with a six part feature on Free Style Machine Quilting,
a technique that I think is the most fun you can have
with a sewing machine. I continue to create and design
and write about new and unusual fiber based techniques.
My greatest passion however is teaching. As an
instructor it is my goal to help each student realize
his or her potential as an artist. I think that
knowledge is freedom and
that freedom gives us wings.
