Heather Thomas
Wild Heather Designs
I’m a mixed media fiber artist who got her start with
traditional quilt making. I designed my first pattern
more than 20 years ago and have published more than 100
designs. After more than 12 years of teaching color &
design I wrote my second book, A Fiber Artists Guide to
Color & Design which came on the hills of my wildly
popular first book, Fabric Embellishing; the basics and
beyond.
In 2011 I was a guest writer for Quilting Arts magazine
with a six part feature on Free Style Machine Quilting,
a technique that I think is the most fun you can have
with a sewing machine. I continue to create and design
and write about new and unusual fiber based techniques.
My greatest passion however is teaching. As an
instructor it is my goal to help each student realize
his or her potential as an artist. I think that
knowledge is freedom and
that freedom gives us wings.

Learn
how to make fantastic fabric bowls by zigzagging coils
of clothesline wrapped with scraps (or "real" fabric) in
this full-day workshop based on the techniques presented
in Susan Brier's book, It's A Wrap. These fabric bowls
are fast and fun and they look spectacular!
You'll learn a quick way to slice bias fabric with your
rotary cutter, how to wrap and glue the fabric in place,
and how to stitch the fabric/clothesline coil. You'll
experiment by making a small bowl. Over-achievers will
be able to make more than one project as you'll be able
to work at your own pace throughout the day.
Bring
to class: Items preceded by an * can be
purchased in class.
*Susan Brier's book, It's A Wrap is required for each
student.
*100 feet lengths of cotton clothesline to wrap.
*100 feet lengths of Ami-dyed cotton clothesline to skip
the wrapping part all together.
*Fabric glue that dries clear and is still pliable (Not
water soluble.)
*Plastic coated wire clips or clothes pins with springs.
* Size 14 (90) needles. (for medium/heavyweight fabrics)
Pre-washed, (and ironed) 100% cotton fabric. Prints are
great as they hide mistakes; large prints with lots of
colors work well; coordinated pieces require only
slightly more thought. Small bowls take about ¾ of a
yard, 1 yard for larger bowls. Bring as much fabric as
you care to haul.
Rotary ruler, cutter and large mat.
A sturdy sewing machine in good working order that
ZIGZAGS. (No featherweights.) Please be sure you know
how to work your machine. Bring ALL the feet you have.
Thread that compliments your fabric choices.
IS THIS OPTIONAL? POWERWRAPER?
Small scissors.
Ami's new, updated PowerWrapper significantly speeds up
the wrapping process. She will bring enough for all
students. Price: $10 each.
