Heather Thomas
Wild Heather Designs
I’m a mixed media fiber artist who got her start with
traditional quilt making. I designed my first pattern
more than 20 years ago and have published more than 100
designs. After more than 12 years of teaching color &
design I wrote my second book, A Fiber Artists Guide to
Color & Design which came on the hills of my wildly
popular first book, Fabric Embellishing; the basics and
beyond.
In 2011 I was a guest writer for Quilting Arts magazine
with a six part feature on Free Style Machine Quilting,
a technique that I think is the most fun you can have
with a sewing machine. I continue to create and design
and write about new and unusual fiber based techniques.
My greatest passion however is teaching. As an
instructor it is my goal to help each student realize
his or her potential as an artist. I think that
knowledge is freedom and
that freedom gives us wings.

FEATURED FIBER ARTIST, WRITER, DESIGNER AND INSTRUCTOR |

Heather
has spent the last two decades learning about color and
sharing her knowledge with others. She believes that
knowledge is power and nowhere is this more true than
when it comes to color! Color can be the driving force
in a quilt or other type of art work. Knowing more about
color can help you become more independent and
successful as a fabric artist.
In this class, Heather will introduce students to
classic color theory. She will discuss the importance of
understanding how colors relate to each other and how
color scale and value come into play. Students will
create their own unique workbook using thousands of
decorative papers as they complete lessons as varied as
how to balance the power of direct complements to
creating harmony with analogous colors. For anyone who
wants to find artistic freedom!
Bring to class:
Paper scissors and 1 large or 2 small glue sticks
Optional Items—all will available for purchase in class
Color & Design; the basics and beyond, by Heather Thomas

teacher in the classroom for the blank booklet and use
of decorative papers
An optional kit with all of the items listed on the
supply list including the book can be purchased at a

TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY QUILTING DESIGNER |
|
Skill Level: Beginning, Intermediate

Light and dark fabrics are stitched or "sistered"
together, sliced, and recombined to make twisting
pinwheel-type blocks that fit together with or without
sashing strips. Other options include floating the
pinwheels, folding 3-dimensional block centers, and
experimenting with leftover chunks, bits, and pieces to
create more quilts.
You’ll have a lot of choices.
Supplies: $17 - Twisted Sisters Rotary Template
& Pattern is required and can be purchased in class.
Bring to class:
Sewing machine, neutral thread, rotary cutters, mat and
ruler.
Fabric can be totally scrappy, coordinated, or in
between. Bring equal amounts of paired lights and darks
or paired color #1 and color #2. Fat quarters or
“regular” yardage both work. (Each pair of fat quarters
yields three blocks; each pairing of "regular" yardage
yields six blocks and some extra pieces.) Fabric for 3½"
x 3½" block centers (color #3 or a repeat of #1 or #2)
are also required.
Bring sashing fabric if desired or as safety net if your
cutting/sewing techniques aren’t the best. The greater
variety of fabrics, the more fun. Don’t haul more than
10 pounds!
Overachievers may cut strips from each pair
into 3½" x 22" (twist) and 5¼" x 22" (background) strips
if working with Fat Quarters, or 3½" x 44" (twist) and
5¼" x 44" (background) strips if working with full-width
yardage. (This means, of course, that they will be
committing to a block strategy without hearing what I
have to say on fabric combinations. Who knows? I may say
something important in class! Just a thought.)

audition colors and values before committing to fabric

In a perfect world, all figures would be alike – in
perfect form. In the real world, we come in all shapes
and sizes. Learn measurement analysis to determine where
and what to change on a “combo pack” figure. Then using
half scale practice patterns we will alter patterns for
such figure combinations as a short midriff, which
requires the pattern to be shortened, but with a
prominent large bust, which requires the pattern to be
lengthened!
We often find opposing figure variations such as this.
Learn the order to make these changes so the fit will be
correct. We will use “real body” combos that we will see
in class as well as “standard” combos. With 88 different
identified figures variations the combos are almost
endless!
Kit fee. $12. paid to the teacher in the
classroom.
Kit includes, binder, page protectors, practice
patterns, backing papers and instruction sheets!
Bring to class:
10 x 12 (approx.) piece of foam board or ¼ inch thick
cardboard
Small paper scissors
Invisible or removable “Scotch” tape
Straight pins
12” ruler
pencil
